The ART Lab

What is it?

The Advocacy, Research and Training (ART) Lab is a new ‘laboratory’ launched to undertake research projects in the arts and homelessness field. The ART Lab enquiries are virtual spaces where social issues and co-produced research questions come together to form new perspectives in the field of arts and homelessness.

How do ART Lab enquiries work?

ART Lab enquiries are virtual spaces where social issues and research questions come together to form new perspectives in the field of arts and homelessness. These enquiries are co-produced from design to delivery, so they grow organically from project to project.

  • We assemble groups of experts in areas of policy, academia, funding, practice and experience. 50% of the groups will be people who are or have been homeless. All freelancers will be paid for their time

  • The groups meet (weekly on-line during C-19) and spend 6-8 weeks on a research topic. The resulting reflections are written up into a short paper and shared.

  • Some move to deeper evaluation or testing, evaluating and refining.

  • Ideas and research questions emerge from the sector through networks, callouts and direct approaches.

1st ART Lab enquiry - What have we learned about the role arts can play in supporting people who are homeless during C-19?

Five creative projects in Wandsworth and Haringey for homeless people staying in emergency accommodation were examined. The enquiry found that these projects had created positive outcomes for people experiencing homelessness, for the centres that offered these courses and for their staff.

2nd ART Lab enquiry - Arts & Homelessness & Womxn

During 6 to 8 weeks, 12 womxn from all walks of life will meet digitally to co-create a response to the topic, drawing on their professional, artistic and lived experiences. The investigation will result in an output to be defined by the group and will contribute to the development of a new theatrical piece, directed by Vicky Moran and performed, written and created with womxn who are or have been homeless. This ART Lab enquiry is co-produced with theatre writer and director Vicky Moran and producer Claire Gilbert.
