Streetwise Opera

Streetwise Opera is an award-winning charity that uses music to help people make positive changes in their lives. Working with people who have experienced homelessness and other members of the community, they run workshop programmes across England and stage critically-acclaimed operas. Their productions platform the skills of our performers in a professional arena, showing that whatever life throws at them, they can achieve great things. Underpinning these, our workshop programme offers a dependable source of creativity in lives where everything else can be changing. Streetwise Opera’s latest production of The Passion (‘Stunning’ ★★★★★ The Times) was broadcast on BBC Four in March 2016. Streetwise Opera also runs a growing programme of international work, connecting, strengthening and exchanging knowledge with arts and homelessness projects around the world.

Our Explore Group in Gateshead focuses on developing performance skills, building confidence and having fun. There are also opportunities to be involved in the creation of new operas as well as volunteer and gain work experience. The group is open to people who have experienced homelessness and members of the wider community who would benefit from a boost in confidence and self-esteem. This session is run in artistic partnership with the Sage Gateshead.

Drop-in Singing and Acting at Crisis Skylight

This upbeat and friendly, open-access group meets in the Crisis Skylight's performing arts space. There’s a lot going on with performances, work placements and free theatre tickets on offer to the group. New people can join at any time and should come along at 3pm on any Thursday for a short induction at Skylight before joining in with the session at 5.15pm. Crisis Skylight also has a packed timetable with lots of other classes and courses on offer.

MAP is a charity which offers practical support and social opportunities to those seeking asylum in Middlesbrough. Depaul UK works in communities where poverty and long-term unemployment have resulted in generations of social exclusion and homelessness. Its Positive Pathways out of Homelessness project provides practical support and helps vulnerable people build their emotional resilience.
